From the shameless dept…
If anybody at Bike Friday wants to send me a Tikit in return for my aging SA 5-speed Brompton, I’d be more than happy to say really cool things about them here. We already use a Family Traveler for the school run every morning and we love it. We were zooming along singing “Gangsters” by the Specials at the top of our lungs this morning….

Simulacra of engagement
November 25th, 2007
dot unplanned » The Things Make Us Stupid:
I used to make a distinction between warm and cool voices … engaged vs. detached, involved vs. analytical. But both those entries struck me as entrants in a third category … warm, cool, and now “warmed over.” Compelled to appear engaged, but not. Interested to the extent a quota demands significations of interest at the rate of n per day, but not deeply involved or engaged, except perhaps on the level of knowing someting about a thing that others might not: That thing is popular, that thing is not popular, that thing is selling well, that thing is not selling well. Consumers like it. Observers do not like it.
Go read this right now. Mike’s “significations of interest” directly nails a bunch of what’s wrong with online right now, up to and including how words like “love” and “friend” have been co-opted by online business. When all you have a hammer, everything may seem like a nail; but it turns out to be much more efficient to call screws nails. Fuzzy thinking on my part, but go read the post.

WordPress upgrade adventures
October 31st, 2007
Just updated the site to 2.3.1, a bugfix release. In the process, though I did backup the db, I managed to wipe out both my plugin and theme directories. So I went looking for an AdSense plugin, and found out about WP widgets. I could basically just make my own damn AdSense widget, which I did. However, when I reinstalled the simpla theme, I discovered that it isn’t widget-aware, but then also discovered that someone else had already made a widgeted version. So everything is pretty much as it was, and more easily maintained too, I’m hoping.
Fix your WordPress install
August 5th, 2007
Via Shelley Powers, there’s a must-install Wordpress Update:
Wordpress users, upgrade to today’s Wordpress security release immediately. This fixes a vulnerability that is ‘in the wild’–examples of how to exploit can be easily found and just as easily exploited. This is not a “We’ll sit around and think about it” update. This is a “Take the steak off the bar-b-que, Joe, and put the margaritas back in the jug! We’ve got work to do!” service release.
Done here - do the same if you’re running WP.
Waiting on the upgrade
June 7th, 2007
Well, I dunno if this revokes my geek credentials, but at the moment I don’t feel like putting in the time and effort to upgrade this WordPress installation. I did the prep up to downloading the release, but then having to pick through individual files instead of just doing a nice tar overlay isn’t doing it for me right now. If not installing will mean that the terrorists have won or can use my blog for mind control, let me know. Otherwise I’m just writing for a while.
Out of the past

Ending the radio silence.
I see that yet another WordPress update has occurred since I last edited this site. Anything worthwhile in it? I’ll probably update soon, but upgrading blog software doesn’t have the charm it once did. (Interesting how with all the improvements to desktop installers, upgrading blogging software is still such a mv/cp/tar xzvf-driven undertaking.) Back soon…

Due to some DNS problems, this site has been offline for a looong time. We appear to be back up now, and I should return to posting soon.
